NZ Artist Jennifer Sosich Showcasing her naughty gnome brooches, created by mouth

Welcome to BITE Art Studio. I’m Jennifer Sosich, a New Zealand-based artist who specialises in mouth painting, polymer clay sculpture, and spiritually inspired art. I create every piece by using my mouth—due to a rare condition called Arthrogryposis, which affects the joints in my arms and legs. This technique isn’t just how I make art—it’s part of my story, my strength, and what makes my work truly one-of-a-kind.

After finding that painting by hand became too physically limiting, I finally listened to my screaming intuitive voice and tried painting with my mouth—and everything changed. From there, I explored polymer clay, and discovered I could sculpt by mouth too.

Now, I create whimsical clay figures, healing crystal pieces, and intuitive paintings

Oh!—and the occasional quirky and naughty piece as well.  Just like the naughty gnome brooches I’m showcasing in the top photo.

Each one is created by mouth, and filled with energy, emotion, intention—and sometimes a little naughtiness.

My work is deeply rooted in art therapy, spiritual connection, and healing through creativity. I believe in the power of art to help us feel, release, remember, and grow. Many of my pieces feature natural crystals, symbolic themes, and storytelling elements that reflect transformation, joy, and inner strength.

In 2016, I moved from Rotorua to Taranaki with my son, which became a turning point in both my personal and creative journey. With my son now grown, I’m focused on expanding my art practice, sharing my story, and building a space where creativity meets wellbeing.

Rose Quartz and Amethyst Crystal Ocean goddess wand clay sculpture crafted by mouth

This Ocean Wand was created intuitively and for no-one in particular, but I felt an overwhelming pull to make her anyway.  I knew the person the wand was for, would come forward when the time was right .  Well, I didn’t have to wait long, because as soon as  I shared a photo on my Facebook page showing her progress, I received a message from a Maori Healer based in Rotorua, exclaiming the wand was for her.  She proceeded to explain to me what each detail symbolised for her and now uses the wand as a spiritual healing tool in her practice.

This was one of the most emotional and powerful pieces of art I have ever made.  It tells the story of my fight against the system, public scrutiny, slander and negative judgments, I once faced as a disabled mother who needed support while my son was a baby.  He’s now grown into a well rounded and wholesome young man.  Proof, that with the right supports in place, almost everything is achievable.

"My beginning" acrylic painting painted by mouth

Aptly named “My beginning”,  I use my sense of humour to show my depiction of how life for me began; speeding off to the finish line in my wheelchair, whilst leaving everyone else behind.  (which I still do today.)
